Step 1: Define Your Product Idea

Before you start designing, ask yourself:
✔️ What problem does my product solve? And/or how does it make the customer feel?
✔️ Who is my ideal customer?
✔️ What makes my product unique?

A well-defined idea ensures you create something desirable and marketable.

Step 2: Research the Market

Look at similar products and identify gaps in the market. Research competitors, pricing, and customer preferences. This will help you refine your idea and position it effectively.

Step 3: Plan Your Production & Materials

Consider how your product will be made. Ask yourself:

  • Will I make it myself or outsource production?
  • What materials or suppliers will I need?
  • What is my estimated cost per unit?

If working with manufacturers, request samples early to test quality before committing to bulk orders.

Step 4: Set Your Pricing Strategy with the Product Planning Guide

Pricing should cover costs while being competitive and profitable. Use this simple formula as a starting point:

Materials + Production + Overheads + Profit Margin (%) + Wholesale (%) = Retail Price

I always base my prices on the cost of materials, production, overheads, and then add a percentage for Profit and Wholesale so I can be sure I’m covered when items are bought wholesale. You can find my suggested Profit and Wholesale percentages in the Product Planning Guide workbook.

Also, consider perceived value when pricing your product – luxury items often command higher prices due to branding and presentation. And don’t forget to do your research. You want to compare the costs of your product to others, but you don’t want to be undercutting them. This will avoid making enemies and also make you more trustworthy. People are less likely to buy something just because it is cheaper unless there is an obvious reason why it is.

Step 5: Create a Marketing & Sales Plan

You need a strategy to reach your audience. Think about:

  • Where will you sell? (Your website, Etsy, wholesale?)
  • How will you promote it? (Social media, email marketing, collaborations?)
  • What story does your product tell?

Compelling storytelling helps customers connect emotionally with your brand.
