About Willow and Woods – Surface Pattern Designer
Willow and Woods is the name that I, Katie, chose to design under. Taken from the middle names of my children, to me it’s more than just a studio or surface pattern designer name.
How I became a surface pattern designer
Coming from a background of album and memory book design I fell upon pattern making while creating designs for the client’s of my personalised album business, And Other Memories.
The joy that comes from putting a pattern together lit a flame that had died out after my more creative school years, and so my surface designs were born. Inspired by the great outdoors, I love nothing more than long walks on the beach or in the countryside, swimming in the sea, and cuddles with my children and dog. All of these things provide a constant source of inspiration and I will often use drawings inspired from my time outside in my designs.

My history
Having studied History of Art at University, I wanted to use what I had learnt over the three year course. However, I still had the itch to be creative!
I decided to set out on a career in the Art Department for television and films. I envisioned myself working on period dramas and using the knowledge I’d gained to create wonderful and realistic sets. After a number of jobs which mainly involved rearranging furniture and guinea pigs, I somehow managed to sidestep into Production. I then spent several wonderful years working my way up to Producer level.
My journey to become a surface pattern designer
Once my son was born I knew that the hours were in-compatible with family life. This pushed me to use my maternity leave to start a bespoke album and memory book design company, And Other Memories. It’s designing the end pages for these albums that brings me the most joy and while searching for a way to get better at them I stumbled across surface pattern design. It was like my world suddenly clicked. I knew immediately I had found something I loved! I was quick to find a pattern design course, luckily starting just a few weeks later – thanks Bonnie Christine, and I haven’t looked back since!
