1. Online research

First off, I want to emphasize the importance of doing your research. The internet is a wealth of information, and social media platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram, and Behance are great places to start.

Look for trendsetting accounts, and pay attention to the hashtags they use to see what’s currently popular.

Design magazines and blogs are also excellent resources for keeping up with the latest trends in surface pattern design.

2. Attend design events/trade shows

Trade shows are a great way to see what’s happening in the surface pattern design industry. They provide an opportunity for designers to see new patterns and products and to network with other professionals in the industry. Some of the most popular trade shows for surface pattern design include Surtex, Heimtextil, and Premiere Vision.

3. Look to fashion

Fashion is often a driving force behind trends in surface pattern design. Designers can look to fashion shows, designer collections, and street style to see what patterns are trending in the fashion world. They can then adapt these trends to create their own unique patterns.

4. Colour trends

Colour is a powerful tool in surface pattern design, and designers can make a pattern on trend just by using popular colours. Use colour trends to create patterns that are fresh and modern. Look to colour trend forecasting services such as Pantone or Coloro, for inspiration and to see what colours are predicted to be popular in the upcoming seasons.

5. Keep an eye on Pop Culture

Pop culture can also be a source of inspiration for surface pattern design trends. Designers can look to movies, TV shows, music, and other forms of popular culture to see what patterns are trending. You can then create patterns that reflect these trends and appeal to a wider audience.

When it comes to discovering trends, inspiration can be found all around us.

Observe the patterns and designs in your surroundings, from fashion to architecture. Look for common themes and colour schemes, and consider how you can incorporate them into your designs.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with new techniques and tools. Trends often emerge from new methods, and experimenting with new techniques can lead to innovative designs. Pushing the boundaries can lead to some great new ideas.

Lastly, it’s important to listen to your clients. They may have specific ideas or requirements that can help guide your design choices. If you create your own products, why not ask your customer’s what they would like to see? Understanding the market and what clients are looking for can help you create designs that are both on-trend and in demand.

In conclusion, discovering trends in surface pattern design is an ongoing process. By doing your research, observing your surroundings, experimenting with new techniques, and listening to your clients, you can create designs that are both timeless and on-trend.
