Hey there!

As a surface pattern designer, one of the most important tools in your arsenal is colour.

So, let’s talk about colour schemes, one of the most exciting and fun aspects of our work! Choosing the right colour scheme can also make or break a design.

When it comes to choosing the perfect colour scheme for your surface pattern design, there are so many options to explore. Here are some of my favourite colour schemes that always work like a charm:

Pinning the finished collection to the moodboard.

Complementary Colour Schemes

If you want to create a bold and striking design, this scheme is perfect for you! Choose colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel, like red and green or blue and orange. This will create a strong contrast that really pops!

Analogous Colour Schemes

For a soothing and harmonious look, try using analogous colours – these are colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, like blue, green and yellow. This creates a beautiful and calming effect that is perfect for certain patterns.

Triadic Colour Scheme

Want to add some vibrancy to your design? Then try a triadic colour scheme! Choose three colours that are equally spaced on the colour wheel to create a fun and balanced look.

Monochromatic Colour Scheme

If you’re looking for a more subtle and cohesive design, go for a monochromatic colour scheme. This means using different shades and tints of a single colour, which creates a beautiful and cohesive design.

Split-Complementary Colour Schemes

This is another great option if you want a balanced yet vibrant design. Choose a base colour and then select two colours that are adjacent to its complement on the colour wheel. This will create a beautiful and eye-catching contrast!

How I work with colour

When designing I tend to work with natural colours as I draw my motifs, and then recolour them to suit my chosen palette. This is probably a longer way to go about it but it is how I prefer to draw! It also brings me so much fun when I get to play with colour at the end. The possibilities are endless and I always find it tough narrowing it down to one!

Remember, don’t be afraid to experiment with different colour combinations until you find the perfect fit for your design. That’s what makes our job so much fun! Let’s keep creating beautiful and unique surface pattern designs! ????????
