Hey there! As a surface pattern designer, you know the importance of keeping your creative juices flowing, but taking a break is also an absolutely essential part of maintaining your productivity and well-being. Summer is a great time to step back from your business and enjoy some much-needed rest and relaxation. We all know how hard it is running our own businesses, wearing all the hats, and also how hard it can be to step away. But time out is so important for avoiding burn out.
With that in mind, here are some tips on how to handle taking a break from your surface pattern design business over summer.
1.Plan Ahead
One of the best ways to ensure a smooth break is to plan ahead. Take the time to prepare your business for your absence. Let your clients know when you’ll be taking a break and when you’ll be back in business. If you have ongoing projects, plan to finish them before your break or if you have a team arrange for someone to take over in your absence. Alternatively, make sure you are leaving your projects in a good place for you to pick them back up when you get back. It can also be a good idea to plan your social media and emails ahead of time.
2. Prioritise self-care
Taking a break doesn’t mean you should stop taking care of yourself. Make time for self-care activities like exercise, meditation, or spending time in nature. Prioritising your well-being will help you come back refreshed and ready to tackle new challenges. You want to come back feeling like you have had a break!
3. Get organised
If you aren’t going away use your time off as an opportunity to get organised. Take the time to declutter your workspace, organise your files, and plan out your future projects. This will help you come back to work with a clear mind and renewed focus.
4. Experiment with new techniques
If you are someone who can’t completely switch off, why not use your break to experiment? Taking a break can also be a great time to try new techniques and styles. Play with new tools or materials, take an online course, or attend a workshop to expand your skills and knowledge.
5. Find Inspiration
While you’re taking a break, take the time to find inspiration in the world around you. Go for a walk, visit a museum, or read a book. Taking in new sights and experiences can help spark new ideas and fresh perspectives.
6. Set boundaries
While it’s important to take a break, it’s also important to set boundaries both for yourself and others. Make sure you’re not checking emails or taking work calls during your time off. Remember to set your out of office while you are off so that people know when to expect you back!
Disconnecting from work will help you recharge and come back feeling refreshed.
7. Reflect
Finally, use your break as an opportunity to reflect on your business and your goals. Consider what’s been working well for you and what you’d like to improve. This can help you come back with a renewed sense of purpose and direction.
Although the idea can be daunting, taking a break from your surface pattern design business over summer can be a great way to recharge and renew your creativity. By planning ahead, prioritising self-care, finding inspiration, setting boundaries, and reflecting on your business, you’ll be able to make the most of your time off and come back ready to take on new challenges. Happy Summer!
